Pattern & Architecture

My practice is primarily painting with regular forays into object-based media. I work in series form, my paintings are typically precise and hard-edged, with an emphasis on pattern and architecture. I value pattern for its formal rhythms and for its cultural associations; it is for me a repository of hidden meanings and unspoken histories, a legacy of growing up in an Anglo English home in a culture with a long tradition of intensely decorative interiors. My imagery and materials often refer to our complex relationship to the home. I am interested in exploring the question of personal style and how it defines (or confines) an artist’s practice, in my work content generates form and consequently moves freely between abstraction and figuration.
